This will be my final blog before the big fight against Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 96 on Saturday. I had hoped to do four of these, but the fact is, I am running out of time and I do not want to bore the readers of MMAWeekly.com.

Training is absolutely amazing, I feel like I can go 10 rounds and still have reserves. The tempo at our gym is just on another level and I freaking love it.

I just found out they were editing out the work part (my engineering) of the UFC Countdown show; it sounds like they are going to focus on my training and family. I am interested to see how they will be portraying me, and what they took from the days they spent with me, my family, and training partners.

Everyone in this industry always asks about my job and I guess the best way to explain it is I have been there done that. When I was talking with the NFL and agents in that world, I was told of so many luxuries and perks that would :lol: your mind. I could hardly keep track of all the promises made and who made them. Then the injury came and the phone stopped – as did all the “perks.”

It was always my mom’s main goal to see all three of her boys receive their college degrees. Now I have a son and a wife, my family's future is at stake. I knew from the beginning that attaining my degree would require a lot of work, but it was important to me and important for my life, I needed to build a platform my family could be proud of. At that time it was a lot easier to focus on the job because playing ball just was not an option. I have worked really hard to get where I am, and I am so incredibly grateful for my employer. At my company, they are very understanding and supportive of my training and competing – this is not the National Guard, so they are not obligated to oblige.

There is one more factor: I never planned on being here. Life has a way of sending you down roads you didn’t even know existed. The last few years have been a whirlwind, and one that I wouldn’t trade for anything. I have so much passion for this sport that every day I train and compete is a blessing. There isn’t another organization better than the UFC. I love fighting for them. To work with a company (UFC) that is so professional and upstanding makes me proud, they have treated me amazingly well. I am very grateful for that.

I have read the comments about me needing to focus on one or the other, but my entire athletic career I was a dual sport athlete and sometimes in football I would play both sides of the ball. I have spent a lifetime multi-tasking at the highest levels. I have a wonderful support team and family, and they allow me to live my dream and at the same time make sure my family is stable and taken care of.

I will be back with the fourth installment of this blog after the fight. I wanted to get you all four before, but after thinking about it, I think it will be interesting to share with you my own post fight perspective, without sound bites or quotes. I am ready to go: these tests are what prove the merit of a fighter. Anyone can have fights that make them look good. I am looking for wars with warriors and Gabe Gonzaga is a true warrior.

O treinamento tem sindo incrível, eu sinto que posso fazer 10 rounds e ainda ter reservas. O treino na nossa academia é de outro nível, e eu adoro.

Eu acabei de saber que tiraram a parte do meu trabalho (de engenheiro) do Coutdown; parece que eles vão focar mais no meu treinamento e família. Eu estou curioso para ver como eles vão me mostrar, e o que eles tiraram dos dias que passaram comigo, minha família e parceiros de treino.

Todos da industria sempre perguntam sobre meu trabalho, e eu acho que a melhor forma de explicar é, eu já passei por tudo. Quando estava falando com a NFL e os agentes que fazem parte desse mundo, me falaram cada coisa, me prometeram luxos e benefícios que iriam espantar muita gente. Eu não conseguia registrar todas as promessas, e quem as fez. E quando eu me machuquei, o telefone parou de tocar.

O objetivo principal da minha mãe era ver os três filhos dela se formarem na faculdade. Agora eu sou casado e tenho um filho, o futuro da minha família está em jogo. Eu soube desde o inicio que para me formar eu precisava me empenhar bastante, mas foi algo importante para mim e para minha vida, eu precisava obter para que minha família tivesse orgulho de mim.

Na época foi fácil me concentrar no meu emprego porque jogar bola não era mais uma opção. Eu trabalhei duro para chegar onde cheguei, e eu sou grato aos meus funcionários. Na minha empresa eles são bastante compreensíveis e apóiam o meu treinamento e as competições – não é a Guarda Nacional, então eles não são obrigados a me apoiar.

Tem um outro fator: Eu nunca planejei estar aqui. A vida te leva para caminhos que vocês nem sabia que existia. Os últimos anos foram uma tormenta e eu não trocaria por nada. Eu sou tão apaixonado por esse esporte que todo dia de treino é uma benção. Não existe outra organização melhor que o UFC. Eu adoro lutar por eles. Trabalhar numa companhia tão profissional como o UFC me deixa orgulhoso. Eles tem me tratado muitíssimo bem. Eu sou muito grato por isso.

Eu li os comentários sobre eu precisar focar mais, em uma coisa ou outra, mas minha carreira como atleta sempre foi assim. A vida toda eu me dediquei a várias coisas ao mesmo tempo, sempre em alto nível. Eu tenho um ótimo apoio da minha equipe, e família, e eles me permitem realizar meu sonho e ao mesmo tempo garantir o futuro da minha família.

Depois da luta eu posto a quarta parte desse blog. Eu queria postar todas as quatro partes antes da luta mas pensando melhor, vai ser interessante dividir com vocês minhas impressões após a luta. Eu estou pronto, são esses testes que provam o mérito do lutador. Qualquer um pode fazer lutas para parecer bem. Eu estou esperando uma guerra entre guerreiros, e Gabe Gonzaga é um guerreiro.

He’s back, Kevin Randleman has signed with Strikeforce and is expected to fight in a future show as a light heavyweight. Randleman was thinking of fighting as a middleweight after losing so much mass due to in activeness and illness.

For Shane Carwin, UFC 96 win answered one more question in path to top

For a full-time engineer, it probably wasn't the most well-designed plan he'd ever been a part of.

Wobbled from punches and lying underneath his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt opponent, Shane Carwin (11-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) probably wondered if the foundation had been laid for a UFC 96 loss.

But as the hulking heavyweight recently told TAGG Radio (www.taggradio.com), the official radio partner of MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com), things changed in a flash.

"I remember when he got me to the ground it was just, 'I need to get up and get out of here,'" Carwin said. "I felt that I was up right next to the fence, and those are some of the stand-ups that we worked in training.

"We went over a lot of stuff being on bottom. I'm always training that constantly. But I'm always staying composed. I kept breathing and stayed relaxed. When we got back up to our feet, I felt refreshed."

A fresh, or refreshed, Carwin has proven to be dangerous in his three-and-a-half year career, and Gonzaga learned it the hard way. Just 69 seconds into the bout, and just as quickly as it appeared he was cruising to victory, Gonzaga found himself on the losing end of a devastating flurry of punches.

"He got the best of me early, and that's the kind of stuff that I love," Carwin said. "That's why I like the fight game.

"It was good for me to go through that adversity. I got hit by Gonzaga a couple times hard. Even him being able to take me down. He's a top-level Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, and to be able to get out from underneath him and get back on our feet and get going after it again, all that stuff was really good for me. I was really looking for a war."

Carwin, of course, is well known as the up-and-coming stud who has yet to make it halfway through the first round. His conditioning is still seen as suspect. But then again, until recently, so was his jaw.

"First it was, 'How good of a chin does he have?'" Carwin said. "These last couple of fights, I think I've been hit. I think Gabe hits as hard as anyone in the heavyweight division. He's a big heavyweight.

"Now the next thing is my conditioning. I think getting hit like that and being able to rebound that fast I think answers some things about conditioning.

"I feel better as the rounds go on. I feel like I get more relaxed and more comfortable and just better as the fight goes on. So I think conditioning is an asset of mine. That fight will come some day when pushed to that third or fifth round, whatever happens. But it'll happen."

In three fights, Carwin has yet to fight three total minutes in the UFC's famed octagon. Some would say that leaves questions that need to be answered. But with Saturday's performance, the 33-year-old showed that he is willing to face the challenges.

"I think [the win over Gonzaga] speaks even a little greater words of the type of fighter I am and the type of character I have -- just that never-give-up attitude," Carwin said. "I come to fight. I like to brawl. And maybe someday I'll get that left hand up a little higher so I don't get hit so many times."

Balançado pelos golpes e embaixo de seu oponente faixa preta de jiu jitsu, Shane Carwin (11-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) provavelmente imaginou que a derrota estava a caminho.

Mas como o gigante peso-pesado disse recentemente a TAGG Radio (www.taggradio.com), a radio parceira do MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com), tudo mudou rapidamente.

"Eu me lembro quando ele me levou ao chão, eu pensei, “eu preciso levantar e sair daqui” disse Carwin. “Eu percebi que estava perto da grade e nós trabalhamos isso no treino.”

“Nós trabalhamos bastante ficando por baixo. Eu treinei isso direto. Mas eu sempre mantive a calma. Eu continuei respirando e me mantendo relaxado. Quando nós nos levantamos novamente, eu me senti renovado.”

Renovado ou não, Carwin provou ser perigoso nos seus três anos e meio de carreira, e Gonzaga aprendeu isso da pior maneira. Apenas 69 segundos de luta, e tão rápido quanto parecia que estava ganhando, Gonzaga se viu perdendo para uma chuva de socos devastadores.

"Ele teve o meu melhor no começo, e é esse tipo de coisa que eu adoro.” disse Carwin. “É por isso que eu gosto de lutas.”

"Foi bom para mim passar por essa dificuldade. Gonzaga me acertou forte algumas vezes. Até ele sendo capaz de me derrubar. Ele é um ótimo faixa preta de jiu jitsu, e ser capaz de sair de baixo dele, voltar a ficar em pé e continuar a luta, toda essa seqüencia foi boa para mim. Eu estava mesmo querendo uma guerra.”

Carwin, obviamente, é conhecido como o lutador que ainda não passou da metade do primeiro round. Seu condicionamento ainda é visto como suspeito. Assim como era visto seu queixo.

“Antes era, ‘será que ele tem um bom queixo?’ diz Carwin. “Essas ultimas lutas eu acho que fui acertado. Eu acho que o Gabe bate mais forte que qualquer outro peso-pesado. Ele é um peso-pesado grande.”

“Agora é sobre meu condicionamento. Eu acredito que ser acertado como fui e ter sido capaz de me recuperar rápido, responde algumas perguntas sobre meu condicionamento.”

“Eu me sinto melhor a cada segundo do round. Me sinto mais relaxado, mais confiante e simplesmente melhor. Então, eu acho que condicionamento é algo que tenho. Um dia vai acontecer da luta ir pro terceiro, ou quinto round, seja lá quando for. Mas vai acontecer.”

Em três lutas, Carwin ainda não disputou 3 minutos inteiros no famoso octógono do UFC. Alguns dizem que ainda faltam respostas para algumas questões. Mas na ultima performance, o lutador de 33 anos mostrou que está atrás de desafios.

“Eu acho que a vitória sobre Gonzaga mostra o tipo de lutador que sou, e o tipo de característica que tenho, a de nunca desistir.” diz Carwin. “Eu vim para lutar. Eu gosto de brigar. E talvez um dia, eu levante a minha mão esquerda para não ser atingido tantas vezes.”

Ele está de volta, Kevin Randleman assinou com o Strikeforce e é esperado que lute num evento próximo como light heavyweight. Randleman estava pensando em lutar como middleweight depois de perder muita massa graças a inatividade e doença.

Acabei de receber um telefonema do antigo campeão do UFC Kevin Randleman, que informou ter assinado com o Strikeforce e que está certo o retorno como light heavyweight.

“Se alguém for me vencer, é melhor que faça isso enquanto eu ainda estou recuperando a forma.”

A ultima luta do antigo campeão do UFC foi em Maio do ano passado, quando ele venceu Ryo Kawamura por decisão unânime no Sengoku “Second Battle”

Another Group Wants a Dana White Apology

During Dana White’s brief apology tour following his use of the word that starts with “f” and rhymes with baguette in a recent video blog, he made two things abundantly clear: 1) he never meant to offend or attack gay people, and 2) he totally meant to offend and attack Loretta Hunt. Amazingly, point #1 seemed to be good enough to get people to mostly forget about point #2, but now the Association for Women in Sports Media (the AWSM, if you’re nasty) is calling on White to apologize for calling Hunt a bunch of ugly words.

"This is disheartening because this behavior is unacceptable," (AWSM President) Jenni Carlson wrote. "It establishes a hostile work environment not only for Loretta but all women who cover the UFC. We cannot accept that any female sports journalist would have to work in an environment of intimidation or a hostile workplace. … It is a mystery to me that a man who is always seeking more coverage and exposure for his sport would disenfranchise some of the very people who are covering, sponsoring and watching his sport — women.”

What have you been up to since the fight with Nate Diaz?

Just staying busy. I’ve had some seminars trying to help out the MMA community. I’ve traveled quite a bit and took a vacation in Mexico. It was good to relax but I’ve been staying active. I last fought on the 31st of January. The next Wednesday I was back in the gym. I’ve helped out with some high school wrestling. But I’m looking forward to my next fight.

What are your thoughts on that?

It’s going to be great. It’s got Fight of the Year written all over it. I consider myself and Sanchez two of the best grapplers in the division. He’s a bigger lightweight coming down from 170. It’s going to be action-packed. I’m going to tear into him from the star. That’s my style. Hopefully I can finish him and I don’t have to go to a decision like last time.

Does a win over him put you in line for a title shot?

It’s a step in the right direction. He’ll be my toughest test to date but I want to take it one step at a time. I’m not overlooking Diego at all.

You worked on a fishing boat a few years ago did you ever think you would be were you are?

Not at all, I had no idea really about fighting. I knew my brother did it and I watched in back in eighth grade with my buddies when Tank Abbott and Shamrock were doing well.

What did you do on the boat?

I worked in a fish factory on the boat. We processed fish 18 to 20 hours a day 7 days a week. It was an awesome experience as a 21 year old male. I wouldn’t change it. I think everyone should try something like that and test themselves. Get out of your comfort zone and see what your made of.

How did you get started in MMA?

Through my brother just by watching him fight. The first one was by accident. I went to a show with my brother and a Lightweight opponent dropped out and they made an announcement over the loud speaker so I got in there. I had no formal training except for a wrestling background. I got choked out in the first or second round but I had a blast. It was a good time and I hadn’t looked back.

How big was the win over Josh Thomson at the Strikeforce show in 2006? That was in his backyard.

That fight and the one before it was the turning point of my career. The fight before that was against Tristan Yunker. He was unknown at the time. He cam out and tapped me out in under a minute after I had won 15 straight fights. Before that we had signed a deal to fight Thomson. I don’t know if I looked past him but it helped me turn a corner in my training. We went out there and took it to Josh for five rounds. We took it five rounds to none.

What are your thoughts on the split decision loss to Gilbert Melendez back in 2006? It could’ve gone either way.

It was still one of my tough fights. He’s a beast. He took it to me for four of the five rounds.

What do you remember about your debut in the UFC 64?

My debut was a blast. My family and friends were there. I got to show my skills on an even bigger stage than Strikeforce. I fought for 20,000 people for Strikeforce but fighting at Mandalay Bay was awesome. I’m looking to stay in the UFC and make an impact in my division.

What was that like walking around backstage and seeing guys like Rich Franklin and Anderson Silva?

It was great. The first day we got there we were in the same workout room with Anderson Silva. Being by him and his camp you are touched by greatness. You are in the presence of a legend. It was so cool. I fought a friend of mine now Justin James. He’s a good submission guy and had me an armbar in the first round. I weathered the storm, got out and I ran through him in the second and finished him off. It was great seeing all those big names. I think about it everytime I get off the plane for the next one. It’s all about the journey and the road to the championship.

You had a war with Tyson Griffin that probably should’ve went your way what are your thoughts on that one?

That fight is a long time gone. I’ve moved past it. He won the other night. He’s a tough dude and I think he won the fight against Sherk. I went for a submission a couple of times in the fight. I think I did enough in the last part of the third round. But some people saw it the other way. No big deal.

How cool was it to get the Fight of the Night?

It’s nice that the UFC takes care of the fighters outside of the purses to show and to win. I don’t plan on it it just happens.

Would you like to rematch Tyson?

I’m not for rematches. Who knows he’s donig well maybe we’ll meet down the road.

How big was the win over Marcus Aurelio at UFC 74?

It got me back in the swing of things. It was the end of summer. I had the loss to Tyson Griffin and Aurelio submitted one of the best Lightweights in the world. It was a split decision but I think I won every round. I dropped him and busted his nose. I thought I fought the perfect fight. It picked up my confidence. I had lost two in a row and it was good to beat a big name that just came over from PRIDE.

Was that fight taken on short notice?

It was a month. I didn’t have long to prepare for that one.

How disappointing was the loss to Roger Huerta? You were easily winning that fight until he caught you in the third round.

The fight speaks for itself. I was dominating it. One of the judges told me the first round was 10-8. I didn’t need to hear that (laughs). I am past that one too. It was a huge learning experience and maybe a blessing in disguise. If I had won that fight they may have inserted me in the title mix. Roger had a lot of hype behind him then you saw his last two fights. Kenny Florian exposed him and I exposed him. Now he’s off the bigger and better things. He’s doing acting and all the best to him.

Would you be open to acting like Huerta, Couture, and several others are doing?

Definitely, the marketability the UFC has people see we aren’t just brawlers and we have some brain power. It’s something I’d like to do but first things first, I want to win the belt.

The win over Mac Danzig was pretty big how cool was that to beat one of the guys who had won The Ulitmate Fighter and the UFC had high hopes for?

Mac had a lot of hype behind him. He’s a tough dude and beat 15 other guys in the house to get a contract. He’s smaller than all of them and beat them all. It was huge to beat a guy who had all that hype. It was the second of three wins in a row. He’s a talented guy and I’m sure he’ll bounce back and have a good career.

Did you ever try out for Ultimate Fighter?

I didn’t try out. I just went out for an interview after my first fight in the UFC. I think they had bigger plans and to stick with the UFC. It was the first Lightweight season when BJ and Jens were the coaches.

Would you ever want to coach on that show?

Definitely, that opens up a huge opportunity. People see how you react and train on a big stage like that. If you can be successful look at how many doors that opens in your gym. People want to rally around someone who does well in the gym and on TV. It’s a huge asset to the UFC and Spike.

Where do you train?

Midwest Training Center, we have some tough guys. Chase Beebe is one of the bigger names. Kevin Knabjian and Mark Miller they fought in the WEC. They beat the hell out of me everyday they just haven’t had the opportunity to get that big fight that blows their career wide open.

How important is your brother to you in your career I’ve seen you two together a lot at fights.

Without him I wouldn’t even know about MMA. I’d be on a fishing boat or framing houses. He’s my best buddy.

What are your thoughts on the fight with Lashley?

He did a great job and he took that fight on real short notice. I couldn’t be out there but my Dad was in his corner. He gave up a bunch of weight. Lashley is a house of a man. It’s no easy task. He stuffed the takedowns for the first round. He did great and and will continue to do well.

Who wins the big fight between Florian and BJ Penn?

It all depends. Kenny has been on a tear submitting guys and finishing guys and BJ looked bad against GSP. But if BJ comes out like he has the last year and a half I think Kenny might have some trouble.

What are your thoughts on the grease controversy? You were there at UFC 94.

I was in the shower. I don’t know too much about what happened. That’s for the coaches and commission to deal with. That’s on GSP’s camp and BJ’s camp.

What do you do after you fight?

It’s mandatory we stick around in the back and watch. They sell the venues out so we don’t have a seat. I go say hi to my parents after the fight then come back and hang out with my brother, coaches and camp and sit back and enjoy.

What does your parents think of you fighting?

My folks are the best. They come to every fight. My mom gets nervous but that’s her being a parent. They love it and they are booked for the fight with Diego.

You have a new Silver Star shirt coming out soon don’t you?

Yeah, check out www.buysilverstar.com. It’s in production right now. It’s going to be a walkout shirt for the Fight Night. I really want to thank Luca and Howard Bass for supporting me and my brother in his fight against Lashley. They hooked him up on short notice. Those guys are great and I know they are doing big things and I know they’ll continue make a dent in the clothing industry and MMA.

Did you ever think you’d have your own shirt like the one Silver Star made for you?

No, but I’m really excited that I do. It goes with the marketability that the UFC has. We have action figures coming out and will be in a video game. We even have Topps trading cards too. Support all of the fighters not just a handful. We need your support and all the exposure we can get.

Is there anything else you’d like to say to the fans?

Silver Star, I want to thank them again. I appreciate them taking care of me. I want to thank my Mom and Dad and my family for supporting me. The fans are great. I want to thank the Chicago Carpenter’s Union. All the best to TapOut. I know Charles is looking down and smiling at us.

O que você tem feito desde a luta com Nate Diaz?

Tento me manter ocupado. Coordenei alguns seminários para ajudar a comunidade do MMA. Viajei bastante a tirei férias no México. Gostei de poder relaxar um pouco, mas continuo na ativa. Minha última luta foi no dia 31 de janeiro, e já estava de volta na academia na quarta-feira após o evento. Também dediquei um tempo para ajudar alunos de wrestling no segundo grau, mas agora estou na expectativa para minha próxima luta.

O que você acha da luta?

Vai ser demais. Tem tudo para ser a Luta do Ano. Acho que Sanchez e eu somos dois dos melhores grapplers na divisão, e ele é grande para um peso leve, descendo dos meio-médios. Será uma luta bem movimentada, e eu vou botar pressão nele desde o início. Esse é o meu estilo, e espero poder acabar com ele e evitar uma decisão como na última vez.

Diria que uma derrotar Sanchez o credencia a uma disputa pelo cinturão?

É um passo na direção certa. Ele será o maior desafio da minha carreira até este ponto, mas considero o caminho um passo de cada vez. Não estou pensando além da luta com Diego, de jeito nenhum.

Você trabalhou em um barco pesqueiro anos atrás. Algum dia imaginou que estaria aqui hoje?

Nem pensar. Não tinha a mínima noção do mundo de lutas. Sabia que meu irmão lutava, e assisti-o na oitava série com meus amigos, quando o Tank Abbott e o Shamrock estavam mandando bem.

O que você fazia no barco?

Trabalhava processando peixes no barco por18 a 20 horas por dia, 7 dias da semana. Foi uma experiência incrível para m cara de 21 anos de idade. Não trocaria isso por nada. Acho que todos deveriam experimentar algo assim para testar seus limites. Fujam de suas zonas de conforto e descubram quem são de verdade.

Como entrou no mundo do MMA?

Através do meu irmão, assistindo as lutas dele. Minha primeira luta foi puro acidente. Fui a um evento com o meu irmão e um lutador peso leve não conseguiu comparecer. Então, eles fizeram um anúncio geral e eu caí dentro. Não tinha nenhum treinamento de luta exceto por minha experiência de wrestling. Fui enforcado no primeiro ou segundo round, mas foi demais. Eu me diverti muito, e nunca reconsiderei minha decisão.

Qual foi o tamanho do impacto de sua vitória contra Josh Thomson no Strikeforce, em 2006? Ganhou na "casa" dele.

Essa luta e a que veio antes marcaram a grande virada da minha carreira. Antes do Thomson, enfrentei Tristan Yunker. Ele era totalmente desconhecido na época, mas entrou lá e me finalizou em menos de um minuto, mesmo depois de eu vencer 15 lutas seguidas. Antes disso, já tínhamos acertado um acordo para enfrentar o Thomson, então não sei se eu desconsiderei o Yunker, mas isso ajudou-me a mudar o meu treinamento. Entrei lá e botei pressão no Josh por cinco rounds. Ganhamos cinco rounds a zero.

O que você acha da sua derrota para o Gilbert Melendez em 2006, por decisão dividida? Qualquer um poderia ter ganho aquela luta.

Mas essa foi uma das minhas lutas mais duras. Ele é um tanque. Foi páreo duro por quatro dos cinco rounds.

O que lembra de sua estréia no UFC 64?

Foi incrível. Minha família e amigos estavam lá na platéia. Tive a chance de mostrar minhas habilidades em um palco ainda maior do que o Strikeforce. Lutei para uma platéia de 20,000 no Strikeforce, mas lutar na Mandalay Bay Arena foi irado. Quero continuar no UFC e causar um impacto na categoria.

Como foi a sensação de percorrer o bastidor vendo gente como o Rich Franklin e o Anderson Silva?

Isso foi fantástico. No dia que chegamos lá, treinamos na mesma sala que o Anderson Silva. Treinar perto dele e a equipe dele é como sentir uma aura de grandeza. Estive na presença de uma lenda. Foi o máximo. Lutei contra o Justin James, que passou a ser meu amigo. Ele é bom com finalizações e encaixou um armbar no primeiro round. Aguentei o tranco, sobrevivi e atropelei ele no segundo round, forçando o árbitro a parar a luta. Ver esses grandes nomes foi incrível. Penso nisso cada vez que saio do avião e parto para o próximo evento. O que importa é a jornada e o caminho rumo ao cinturão.

Você travou uma verdadeira guerra contra Tyson Griffin que provavelmente deveria ter ganho. O que tem a dizer sobre a luta?

Essa luta já é o passado remoto. Passei dessa fase. Ele venceu naquela noite. O cara é casca-grossa, e achei que ele também venceu contra o Sherk. Tentei algumas finalizações naquela luta e acho que pressionei e fiz o bastante para definir o final do terceiro round. Porém, tem gente que não concordou. Nada de mais.

Foi legal ganhar o prêmio de Luta da Noite?

É bom saber que o UFC cuida de seus lutadores além das bolsas fixas por lutar e vencer. Não planejo para isso - é algo que simplesmente acontece.

Gostaria de uma revanche contra o Tyson?

Não sou muito fã de revanches. Ele está lutando bem, então pode ser que nos encontremos mais tarde.

Qual foi a importância de sua vitória contra Marcus Aurélio no UFC 74?

Colocou-me de volta no caminho certo. Foi no fim do versão. Eu tinha acabado de perder para o Tyson Griffin, e sabia que o Aurélio já tinha finalizado um dos melhores pesos leves do mundo. Nossa luta terminou em uma decisão dividida, mas acho que ganhei todos os rounds. Consegui derrubá-lo e detonei o nariz dele. Acho que lutei a luta perfeita ali, e isso deu uma força para a minha confiança. Tinha perdido duas lutas seguidas, e foi ótimo derrotar um grande nome que tinha acabado de fazer a transição do PRIDE.

Aceitou a luta de última hora?

Aceitei um mês antes da luta, então não tive muito tempo para me preparar.

Quão desapontado ficou com a derrota para Roger Huerta? Você estava vencendo facilmente até ser pego no terceiro round.

A luta diz tudo. Eu estava dominando. Um dos jurados até disse que o primeiro round tinha sido 10-8. Eu não precisava saber disso! (risos) Também já deixei essa luta para trás. Aprendi muito com a experiência, e na verdade pode ter sido uma benção. se eu tivesse ganho, possivelmente estaria disputando por uma luta pelo cinturão. Na época, só falavam no Roger e todo o marketing o apoiava, mas viu o que aconteceu nas últimas duas lutas. Kenny Florian expôs as falhas dele, assim como eu. Agora ele decidiu seguir outro rumo na vida. Seguiu papéis como ator, e desejo tudo de bom para ele.

Estaria disposto a atuar, assim como Huerta, Couture e vários outros lutadores?

Sem dúvida. Devido à visibilidade do UFC, o público vê que não somos somente brigões de rua. temos cérebros. Adoraria fazer algo assim, mas primeiro preciso cuidar do que interessa: quero o cinturão.

A vitória contra Mac Danzig foi bem importante. Gostou de derrotar um vencedor do The Ultimate Fighter, que certamente figurava nos planos futuros do UFC?

A mídia deu corda ao Mac. Ele é fera, e derrotou 15 outros caras na casa para ganhar o contrato. Ele era o menor cara da casa, mas ganhou de todos que apareceram pela frente. Ganhar de um cara como ele, que era o nome na boca do povo, foi uma vitória enorme. Foi minha segunda vitória de três em seguida. Ele tem muito talento, e sei que vai se recuperar e ter uma boa carreira.

Chegou a aplicar para um lugar no Ultimate Fighter?

Não participei dos testes. Só fiz uma entrevista após minha estréia no UFC. Acho que eles já tinham outros planos em mente, e eu continuei no UFC mesmo. Foi a primeira temporada com pesos leves, liderado pelo BJ e o Jens como técnicos.

Teria interesse em ser um treinador no programa?

Com certeza. É uma oportunidade incrível. Todos vêem como você reage e treina em uma plataforma como essa. se tiver sucesso no programa, isso abre as portas para todos na sua academia, como podem ver. Todos gostam de torcer por alguém que dá duro nos treinos e na televisão. É um instrumento fundamental para o UFC e a Spike.

Onde você treina?

Treino no Midwest Training Center com uns caras durões. Chase Beebe é um dos maiores nomes da academia. Kevin Knabjian e Mark Miller também já lutaram no WEC. Eles acabam comigo todos os dias nos treinos, mas ainda não tiveram a oportunidade de participar daquele lutão ideal que alavancará suas carreiras ao limite.

Qual é a importância do seu irmão em sua carreira? Vejo-os treinando juntos frequentemente.

Sem ele, eu nem conheceria o MMA. Estaria em um barco de pesca ou consertando casas. Ele é o meu melhor amigo.

O que você achou da luta dele com o Lashley?

Ele se saiu bem, ainda mais porque aceitou a luta na última hora. Não pode assistir ao vivo, mas o nosso pai estava lá no córner. O Jason lutou mesmo com uma diferença de peso grande. Lashley é um gigante, e não foi uma luta fácil. Ele conseguiu defender os takedowns no primeiro round. Saiu-se muito bem, e continuará assim.

Quem vencerá o lutão entre Florian e BJ Penn?

Depende. O Kenny anda atropelando, finalizando e parando todos no caminho dele, enquanto o BJ lutou mal contra o GSP. Porém, se o BJ lutar como no último ano e meio, acho que vai ficar feio pro Kenny.

O que acha da controvérsia da vaselina? Estava lá no UFC 94.

Eu estava no chuveiro. Não sei muito sobre o que aconteceu. Isso é assunto para as equipes técnicas e a comissão atlética. Fica entre a equipe do GSP e a do BJ.

O que você faz após cada luta?

Voltar ao vestiário para assistir o resto do evento é obrigatório. Eles lotam os lugares, então não há onde sentar na platéia. Dou um alô aos meus pais após a luta, e depois volto ao vestíario para relaxar e curtir o evento com meu irmão, meus treinadores e minha equipe.

Qual é a opinião dos seus pais sobre o fato de você lutar?

Meus pais são o bicho. Eles aparecem para assistir cada luta que faço. Minha mãe fica preocupada, mas isso faz parte de ser mãe. Eles adoram isso, e já tem passagens compradas para minha luta contra o Diego.
