The main event of this weekend's "UFC 110: Nogueira vs. Velasquez" card is based on a great storyline of "young buck meets grizzled veteran." But at today's pre-event press conference in Sydney, Australia, UFC president Dana White confirmed what many MMA observers had already suspected: an immediate title shot might hinge on the bout as well. Despite an upcoming interim heavyweight title fight between top contenders Shane Carwin and Frank Mir at UFC 111 in March, White acknowledged that the winner of the featured contest between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cain Velasquez at UFC 110 might be next for returning UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar. "Brock is back in the heavyweight division now," White said. "He's healthy, and he's going to fight again. Mir and Carwin are going to fight for the interim title because that fight was already made before Brock said he was coming back. "[Nogueira and Velasquez], the winner of this fight puts them right in the mix because something could happen to either Shane or Mir in that fight where they couldn't fight Brock, so the winner of this fight would fight Brock." Lesnar has been inactive since this past July's UFC 100 event, where he defeated Mir via second-round TKO. After battling through a career- and life-threatening case of diverticulitis in the interim, Lesnar in January announced he would return to fighting this year. An exact date for Lesnar's return has not been established, but in January, White said he hoped to get the "interim" tag off of the winner of the March bout between Carwin and Mir as quickly as possible. "In a perfect scenario, Mir and Carwin fight, one of them wins, comes out healthy, and then we do the Brock fight," White said. However, in the often less-than-perfect world of mixed martial arts, Nogueira and Velasquez will now fight for the right to fill a standby role in the UFC's heavyweight title picture.
