Nate Marquardt takes on Demian Maia at UFC 102 on Aug. 29 at the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Ore., in a middleweight match-up that will likely put the winner in line for a title shot in his next outing.

Marquardt is currently ranked third on the MMAWeekly.com middleweight world rankings, while Maia takes up the tenth slot. Either of them could have been an easy sell for a title bout with Anderson Silva and that was part of the appeal in Marquardt accepting the fight.

"That's why I was really excited to get that fight because a lot of times they won't put two top contenders against each other because it gets rid of one of the title fights," Marquardt told Tapout Radio. "It's an honor to be able to fight another top contender and come out as the top, top contender."

With a title shot on the horizon, he is focused on the task at hand and insists he's not looking past Maia to greener pastures.

"I hope to get the title shot, but right now he's the top contender and he's who I'm fighting," said Marquardt. "I'm going to get my shot when it's my time, when God wants me to get that shot. I don't think it's something I've got to stress about, or worry about. It's kind of out of my hands anyway. All I have to focus on is doing my best when I fight, and that's it."

On paper, Marquardt is the more well-rounded fighter of the two, but Maia's submission game is the best in the division, if not the best in the sport. Asked how he plans to overcome Maia's jiu-jitsu, the 30-year-old Colorado resident said, "He's a world class jiu-jitsu fighter and I'm lucky enough to have world class guys that I train with, world class jiu-jitsu and world class MMA fighters.

"I think it's just going to take all my tools," he added. "I'm going to show up in shape, and I'm going to have to use all my technique on the ground as well as my strength and power, my punching power to kind of negate all of his jiu-jitsu setups. It's going to be a great fight. I'm excited."

Not only is he excited, Marquardt is also confident heading into the Octagon on Aug. 29. "I think he's going to be in trouble no matter where the fight goes," stated the Greg Jackson trained middleweight. "If he tries to pull guard on me, I'm going to pound him from the top. If he tries to bang with me, I think that's a big mistake. He's going to have trouble getting me down, and if he does get me down, I'm going to be able to fight him off the bottom.

"I really don't know how it's going to start out. My guess is he's going to try to be more aggressive to take me down, but either way whatever he comes out with I'm ready for it and I'm going to be putting the pressure on him the entire time. By the end of the fight I'm going to be the one attacking him, that's for sure."

Nate diz que é uma honra lutar com outro top contender mas que o foco dele agora é o Demian Maia.

Dizem que o Nate é mais Well Rounded - bom em varias areas - que Demian porém o Demian tem o melhor Jiu jitsu da categoria, senão de todoo esporte!! Nate por sua vez diz que tem muita sorte de ter caras muito bons em sua equipe.

Diz que pretende mostrar todas as suas ferramentas e que vai mostrar que está em forma e quem mais punch, mais força e uma boa técninca de chãoe que irá neutralizar sua técninca e se diz muito exitado com a luta.

Pra finalizar ele diz que não sabe como a luta vai se desenrolar e que tem dúvidas se o Demian vai vir agressivo para derrubar e que seja lá como for ele vai estar preparado e que irá impor seu ritmo e no final da luta ele será o único a atacar!

Cara, tmb acho que será o maior desafio p/ o Demian, mas luta é luta, qualquer um dos dois pode não estar bem no dia (espero que seja o Nate), mas espero que o Demian faça uma ótima luta e sai vencedor. Ferramentas ele tem!

Ontem acabei revendo a luta dele contra o Sonnen, se ele entra nessa de baixar a cabeça e sair distribuindo socos vai ser nocaute no primeiro round (para o nate).

Até a estratégia de puxar para a guarda vai ser perigosa, em comparação aos outro adversários que o demian enfrentou, o Nate é muito mais forte.

Acho que a melhor estratégia é tentar fazer um jogo de contra ataque e colocar para baixo (caindo por cima). se cair por cima é 90% de chances de finalizar.

O Demian tem me surpreendido positivamente em sua parte de quedas, mesmo contra bons lutadores de wrestling (Nate Quarry e Chael Sonnen). Acho que não será a coisa mais impossível do mundo ele quedar o Marquardt.

Porém, há de se manter alerta quanto à trocação, e com o fato do americano ser muito explosivo e agressivo.

O Nate é um casca grossa de primeira, mas o Demian tem armas para vencê-lo.

Claro que o Demian pode ganhar e se isso acontecer não seria surpresa.

Eu PARTICULARMENTE acho que dá Nate.

Demian contra trocadores tem vencido fácil, creio que seja mais pela falta de habilidade no solo dos seus oponentes do que pelo excesso de habilidade do Demian(e isso ele tem mesmo).

Quando pegou o Jason MacDonald que tinha uma base razoavel no solo ele perdeu posições e fez uma luta dura.

Nate por sua vez vem evoluíndo no MMA e como um bom wrestler ele já deve ter uma boa defesa de queda... Sabendo que vai pegar um cara fora de série no chão, acho que ele vai dar ainda mais enfase na defesa de quedas.

Trocação do Demian não é boa e já a do Nate é excelente vide sua luta contra o Wilson Gouveia.

Pra mim dá Nate por TKO via ground n' Pound no 3° Round

Vamos ser sinceros, "The Great" é o favorito

Eu nem lembrava da luta dele com o Jason MacDonald, e foi uma luta muito dura, o Jason chegou até pegar as costas do Demian e encaixar um mata leão, foi uma luta muito movimentada no chão, eu não lembrava disso, e o Marquardt é faixa preta tb

Bem essa é para mim a luta mais esperada do evento!
