UFC 102: Bad economy and high taxes drag ticket sales down

Portland, Oregon – The momentum being built by the UFC over the past few events may be encountering a temporary road bump. Ticket sales for UFC 102, to be held on August 29, are lagging well behind the pace expected for a sellout event.

The Rose Garden holds just under 20,000 people for an MMA event. To date, the event has sold a little more than 9,000 tickets.

With an Oregon-bred fighter the caliber of MMA icon Randy Couture scheduled in the main event, ticket sales are expected to improve but the hopes of selling out the arena are likely all but gone.

A poor economy has affected the nation as a whole, but Oregon has been hit harder than most states.

According to a forecast from Oregon state economist Tom Potiowsky, the economy will only continue to get worse in Oregon:

Oregon's economy, bad as it is, will get even worse over the coming months, threatening double-digit unemployment and early school closures while sucking billions of dollars from the state budget, according to a forecast released Friday.

"We're falling basically into a pit," said state economist Tom Potiowsky. He had the unenviable job of telling stone-faced state officials how much -- or how little -- they can spend on education, aid to the poor and other programs.

According to Potiowsky's forecast, which is used to set state spending levels, the current state budget will come up short by $855 million. For the 2009-11 budget, the gap between projected revenue and the rising cost of state services grows to $3 billion.

The other factor that has undoubtedly affected ticket sales are the high tax rates the UFC will be paying to hold their event.

The Oregon State Athletic Commission charges a 6% gross receipt tax for MMA events. In addition, the City of Portland also charges a 6% tax, in effect taxing any MMA promoter 12% of gross revenue on their ticket sales.

As a result, the UFC has set ticket prices at $600, $400, $300, $200, $100, and $50 in an effort to recoup some of the revenue that will be paid in taxes.

When taxes are higher, and ticket prices are subsequently raised, the obvious result is suffering ticket sales.

There is speculation that the UFC was considering putting on the Randy Couture match against Brock Lesnar at the Rose Garden in Portland, but the issue of high taxes played a large role in the decision to hold the event in Las Vegas.

If ticket sales don’t meet UFC expectations, it’s doubtful they will be back in Portland until the economy recovers enough to comfortably support a large-scale MMA event.

Not only does the economy trickle down, but it trickles back up as well.

- 20mil ingressos foram colocados a venda para o UFC102, mas ate agora só 9mil foram vendidos, mesmo sendo a casa do Couture.

- o principal motivo é que o Oregon é um dos Estados mais afetados pela crise - dois digitos de desemprego e escolas irão fechar o ano mais cedo por falta de orçamento!!!

- e é onde mais se cobra imposto para os ingressos (6% da comissao atletica, e mais 6% para a Prefeitura) o que tornou o ingresso mais caro.

- esses fatores motivaram o UFC a nao marcar a luta de Lesnar vs Couture naquele lugar, como foi especulado no inicio.

- Se a venda for realmente ruim, é capaz que o UFC nao volte ao Estado por algum tempo.

Pode ser, mas acho que na realidade isso acaba afetando pouco. Couture é natural de lá, o card ainda tem vários lutadores do Estado ou lutadores de academia local. Acho que é falta de grana mesmo e pouco interesse da população nesse tipo de esporte.

Pro público leigo o card tem o Randy, que é de Portland. Normalmente isso seria mais do que suficiente. Só que um estado bem afetado pela crise + ingressos caros por causa da carga tributária = fail.

acredito que tenha sido já antecipado esse risco... porem, é uma forma de estabelecer um novo mercado... pode nao dar lucro hoje, mas deve trazer resultados no futuro.

E é melhor aproveitar o Couture da melhor forma possivel para trazer resultados (atuais e futuros), já que muito em breve ele nao luta mais mesmo.
