"What we know about Sambo is what the USSR historians tell us
And that is, that Sambo was a collective effort of many people, including the before mentioned two.

It is known, that many researchers were sent to study folk styles of wrestling and hand to hand combat all over USSR, neighbouring countries and beyond.

So, the result was a combat system, developed for the early KGB (NKVD) and LEOs.

Later on, a pure grappling style was derived, to become a sport for the masses and to represent USSR in the Olympics.

The original version was kept for military and police training and both held regular competitions within the Warsaw Pact, available for military and police personal only.

That version was popularized internationally from the 90s, to become known as Combat Sambo.

Truth been, thats what actual Sambo was."

"As for the Combat Sambo rules, before it was developed as a sport, each competition rule set details were discussed in advance, mainly considering the uniforms (gi or military clothing) or protection (with or without).

The actual rules of combat was not any different that what we see now.

Its just the most effective way to put a beatdown on a person with a jacket."
